How I Work With Clients

My work blends behavior science, biomechanics, and equine wellness into an individualized, horse-first process. Whether in a lesson, a consult, or a clinic, we focus on:

  • Building a clear line of communication between horse and human

  • Supporting posture, movement, and emotional regulation

  • Creating a training plan that fits the horse’s body, brain, and real life

Every session is collaborative. That means listening to your horse and you, adapting as needed, and always keeping the whole picture in view.

The FORTAE Approach

The Fortae Project was created out of the belief that great training only happens when horse and rider are connected. The FORTAE framework came about in response to the question: How do we build connection? The broad answer lies in understanding. Knowing how the horse’s brain, body, and environment all influence behavior, and learning how to respond in ways that actually support progress, rather than only managing symptoms.

Whether you’re starting fresh, overcoming a specific challenge, or looking to deepen work you already love, this approach is designed to meet both horse and rider where they are, with tools that create change from the inside out.

The FORTAE Framework

The foundation of my work is built around the FORTAE Framework - a flexible, progressive process that guides how we observe, support, and train.

Each step builds on the one before it, helping both horse and rider develop awareness, trust, and a shared language that leads to better outcomes and a more enjoyable experience.

F – Foundation

Before meaningful progress can happen, the horse needs to feel physically and emotionally secure. This step focuses on things like posture, pain, environment, and nutrition. This lays the groundwork for learning and healthy movement.

O – Observation

This is the key to communication, and where the conversation begins. Learn your horses “language” by noticing patterns, and becoming aware of what your horse is showing you.

R – Response

Here, we focus on responsiveness without reactivity, using R+ and choice-based learning to build clear, confident responses from the horse. Learn the nuance of “feel” through your timing, body language, energy, and the choices you make in each moment.

T – Trust

Trust grows from consistency and fairness. It allows the horse to engage without defensiveness and gives the rider confidence in their process. This is where partnership becomes more reliable and resilient.

A – Attunement

Attunement is the ability to stay present and responsive to small changes. It’s about adjusting our approach based on what the horse is showing us, and learning the art of building sensitivity rather than rigidity into the work.

E – Expression

Expression is feedback. When the horse feels safe and understood, you’ll start to see more curiosity, personality, and engagement in the work. This kind of expression leads to better performance, clearer communication, and a partnership that holds up long-term, as well as a horse who wants to be part of the process.
